Experience the Sciardiglia Organic Farm - La Fescennina

La Fescennina has created four different educational experiences at the farm for families, schools and foodies of all ages.

Half-day or full-day visits can be reserved from Monday to Sunday. At the time of booking we will inform you if your chosen day coincides with a particular processes and, where possible, you will be able to see exactly how we work.

The Magic of Organic Hazelnut Grove (Duration: 2.5h)

A wonderful walk through the hazelnut trees awaits you:
you will discover the life cycle of the plants and find out what happens to them during all four seasons that results in them giving us their precious fruits. We will tell you how we accompany them step by step using exclusively organic cultivation techniques.
You will visit the place where it all began, the first plot of land bought by our family in 1879: the heart of the farm. Here we will tell you about the evolution of harvesting techniques and how the hazelnuts were processed and stored, all enriched by anecdotes handed down by grandmother Adriana.
You will start from the beginnings of hazelnut cultivation right up to the current, more modern techniques.
During the visit you will be able to taste our hazelnuts at all stages of the process, from the freshly shelled fruit to the spreadable creams with added cocoa and sugar, all of which are produced organically.
After this journey through nature, history, technique and passion, we are sure that you will see what at first sight may seem like a simple hazelnut in a completely different light!
If you would like to learn more about our beloved region, at the end of your experience you will be taken for a walk through history. The historic centre of Corchiano and the Forre di Corchiano Natural Monument awaits you.

The secrets of the Biological Laboratory (Duration: 2.5h)

Antonio will open up the doors to our beloved organic laboratory.
Starting from shelled hazelnuts, we will explain every stage of the process that leads to the production of our delicious Amerina and the irresistible Dragèes.
We will tell you about how we chose our other organic ingredients and how they interact with our hazelnuts.
From the aroma of the roasting process to the lightness of the hazelnut flour, passing through the slow refining process becoming a pure hazelnut paste.
During and after your visit you will be able to taste some of La Fescennina products for a full sensory experience (raw and toasted hazelnuts, hazelnut butter, hazelnut spreads, dragées).

A Day at the Farm
(Duration: 4h)

Combine the two aspects at the heart of the La Fescennina Organic Farm in a single experience for an unforgettable day.
You will discover the cultivation techniques and the history of the Sciardiglia family with ‘The magic of the organic hazelnut grove’ before following the path of the hazelnuts from the groves to the processing laboratory where they are transformed into our delicious finished products with ‘The secrets of the organic laboratory’ experience.
We will show you what it is like to live an entire year on the Sciardiglia – La Fescennina organic farm in just one day.
At the end of your experience, you will know everything there is to know about our PDO Organic Roman Hazelnuts!
During the visit you will be able to taste our hazelnuts at all stages of the process, starting from the freshly shelled fruit to the spreadable creams with added cocoa and sugar, all of which are produced organically (raw and roasted hazelnuts, hazelnut butter, spreadable creams, dragées).
If you would like to learn more about our beloved region, at the end of your experience you will be taken for a walk through history. The historic centre of Corchiano and the Forre di Corchiano Natural Monument awaits you.
The experiences may differ depending on the time of the visit. Transportation between the groves and the workshop will be by participants’ own vehicles. The tracks are suitable for all types of vehicles.

Kids on the Farm
(Durata: 4h)

A programme designed specifically for school children from first grade upwards.
Girls and boys will enjoy a unique experience, following step by step the changes in the hazelnuts over the course of the seasons and, together with the prized fruit, will enter our processing workshop.
They will be introduced to organic cultivation techniques and the strict regulations that need to be followed in order to gain PDO Roman Hazelnut status, and learn about the importance of biodiversity and protecting the land. We will explain how our way of running the farm is based on zero waste and the use of sustainable energy sources.
At mid-morning, participants will be able to enjoy a tasty snack made with our organic hazelnut spreads (bread with hazelnut butter and spreads, water and fruit juice).
